Sag's Euro-Blend Terrain Patch v2.0 for "European Air War"
By Shawn "sagginb" Griffin 9/29/02
***************************************************************************************************************************************************
The E-B Patch v2.0 is not really a patch to really fix anything with the original, it was intended as a way to give a different look to certain areas of the Euro-Blend v1.0 terrain set.
I have added a different water texture, in which I tried to give a more balaced look between blues and teals.
The original E-B v1.0 came with 2 water textures...one dark blue (by C.Lumpkin for the Pacific) and one light blue (the default water texture used in EAW).
I have tried to combine the things I liked best about the 2 into one texture (I hope most will find it OK).

I also began to feel the coastlines rocky textures seem (IMO) to run too far inland to look correct to scale.
So that distance has been reduced.
I have looked at a few coastline pics and seems to me that the coastline should have alot of areas that are built up...more so than inland other than city areas.
In that area I tried to add the "more life" feel to the coastline by adding more roadways/houses/towns/docks and more beaches along the shoreline.
So at leastbtry and represent this effect while flying over.
I was looking to not make the change from water to land be so distinctive (deep).

There is also a different look to the countryside field areas.
I used more of the Paul Wilson style of smaller fields blended into the original Euro-Blend terrain set, and there is also a few changes/additions to smaller towns and cities and I tried to add a little more water/lakes slipped in so to again try to represent these looks a little more.
I am also working on a "smaller" E-B Patch v3.0 in which I use all these updates (to water/coastline/towns) but the field areas will be more along the normal looser Euro-Blend style...so look for that soon. :^)

Now...How to setup the E-B Patch v2.0:
The easiest way to update to this version of the Euro-Blend Terrain is to setup a copy of the original Euro-Blend v1.0 set and overwrite with these new files included in Set 1 & Set 2 (and optional Low-Res files).
Just group the files from Set 1 & Set 2 together...and you will have a couple of options from there.

1: If you are looking for the normal (Low-Res-128x128) "Lr" files for distant view?
Delete the "hiresmod.bat" file and add the 28 "Lr" files included in the "E-B Low Res" folder to give you 56 files in total.

2: If you want a set of Hi-Res files just run "hiresmod.bat" file located inside your grouped together set of files from Set 1 & Set 2 and you will create the needed 28 "Lr" files which give you 56 in total.

When you go to overwrite (or update v1.0 with this patch) you should have the following 56 files set to add.

All credited in the original E-B v1.0 are still to be thanked. (see below)

For E-B Patch v2.0 I used more/additional ideas and textures again from...

Paul Wilson's European Summer and Pacific Mainland terrains....Textures used.
C.Lumpkin's S.Pacific "Tarawa" terrain..........................................Textures used.

How to setup this new terrain:

Ok...There are a few options/steps that have been included in this terrain with Hi-Res & Low Res. options and 2 types of water textures.
So some building will have to be done to suit your preference best.

1st - Group together Set-1, Set-2, & Set-3 of Bn*.ter files in one folder name it what ever you wish.
I will use "XXX" just for this example...it doesn't matter.

2nd - Next you can decide if you want the "Dark Blue" or the "Light Blue" water and then add the Bn*.ter files from that folder titled either "Sag's Dark Blue water patch" or "Sag's Light Blue water patch" to your "XXX" folder .
Note: (This should give you 59 Bn*.ter files inside your "XXX" folder)

3rd - If you don't want the Hi-res version of tiles the next step is to add the Lr*.ter files inside the "Low-res files Sag's Euro-Blend Terrain" folder to your "XXX" folder.
Note: (If you do want Hi -Res tiles you can skip this step)

4th - If you don't want the Hi-Res version of the water tiles the next step is to get the Lr*.ter files inside either the "Low-Res files for Dark Blue water" or "Low-Res files for Light Blue water" folder and add them to your "XXX" folder.
Note: (If you do want Hi -Res tiles you can skip this step)

5th - Now for you guys who skipped steps 3 & 4 and want the Hi-Res tiles you should have 59 Bn*.ter files inside your "XXX" folder but no Lr*ter files.
To get the Hi-Res files all you must do is run the hiresmod.bat * and 59 Lr*.ter files will be created.
Note: (For you guys who already have 59 Lr*.ter files you can skip step 5 and delete the hiresmod.bat file.)

6th - (Optional) You can also download the Airfield & Hills options...This will give you a better blended set of Airfield textures and a nice Hilly game world.
Note: (These are not need in any such way for the terrain to work proper but IMO are 2 nice little things to include)

* Note: hiresmod.bat file created by max188...thanks.

History:
I have been working on this European terrain mod for EAW mostly evenings and weekends starting around Nov.25th/26th 2001 and finished Jan.15 2002 here are a few ideas and steps that went into the building of this set.

After the release of gpmwapl's "gpmTpc2Pcx" converter tool I wanted to attempt to change Paul Wilson's blue water textures (now done by "von oben") and add other ideas I have thought about with his nice EAW European terrain.I have also always liked many things about Jay's CFS conversion as well and found what I really wanted was a "Blend" of ideas of the 2 terrains.
So I decided to do some test.
What I found IMO was that it would be easier in many ways for me to kinda start for scratch and just try to include some of my favorite parts/ideas of each of these terrains.
As I played around I also found some nice stuff in Microprose's "Gunship" terrain textures and Microsoft's CFS1 that Jay didn't use in his CFS to EAW conversion that I ended up using some texture ideas as well.
And this went on and on until I started to see a possible interesting terrain idea in the works.

The idea was to build a kind of blend of locations...a nice mix of hedge rows, variable fields and some road structure of sorts.
A terrain which may not be correct for one single area but passable for all areas that are included in the EAW game world.
I wanted there to suggest life in some way on the terrain...so I also used roads, houses and farms in many areas and even tried to give many houses their own driveways and such...I was after a populated surface look that didn't go with a total endless set of fields and grass.I tried to add tree textures to each tile as well to also give a nice balance to the surface.
Another sticking point was that I couldn't decide which water texture to use so in the end decided to do 2 patches and let you guys decide for yourselves...a "Darker Blue" version that uses C.Lumpkin's S.Pacific "Tarawa" water texture (that includes a slight blend of his CFS coast fix cliffs, beaches and surf) and another "Light Blue" version that just uses the default water textures.
I did some fooling with max's textured terrain idea and found that to texture just the rocky coast looked interesting and to just leave the (land) terrain & water smooth got something close to a look I liked.
There was alot of tile blending problems with how I was going about putting these textures together because of the lack of a random pattern which can help in fooling your eyes and the fact that many things were painted by hand or with a very small sized clone of textures.
This left me to try many ideas.
Not many of these worked that well...Such as...I tried to leave the edges with a little random grassy texture but because the tiles are so busy it just looked like it "framed" each tile and to just put fields all along the edges...(which is the best to blend) really lost the feel I was looking for.
So I decided to just keep going and blend the tiles best I could...so there will be some places were things will not blend as good as I wanted...believe me...I know about alot of them and did my best.
Maybe when I have had a break I'll come back and try to do some places better. :^)

Enjoy you guys! Shawn

Note:
There was 68 terrain tiles included in the picpac tool when released.
After extracting all the terrain files from the "Terrain.cdf" and looking at test tiles (in game) it seems EAW does "NOT" use some tiles...these ( 9 tiles ) are as follows:
	1 - Bn/Lralcty6.ter
	2 - Bn/Lrbase.ter
	3 - Bn/Lrfield3.ter
	4 - Bn/Lrfield9.ter
	5 - Bn/Lrgrass2.ter
	6 - Bn/Lrriver3.ter
	7 - Bn/Lrroad3.ter
	8 - Bn/Lrroad5.ter
	9 - Bn/Lrroad7.ter
** These files are not included in this release because they seem to do nothing. :^)
